| HELP This is not the time of year you want your heater to stop working in your car Our Golf 2.0 gti mark 3 started running hot, so after changing a flange and thermosat it is still overheating and doesn't seem to be blowing hot air into the car. Does anyone have any other ideas on what this could be????????? many thanks Bertha | |

| Might be something as stupid as an air lock...
Failing that, it could be that your water pump is shagged...

| could be a number of things such as dodgy thermostat, dodgy water pump, airlock in coolant system, too much anti freeze, to the worst case scenario of knackered head gasket.
as gti john says regarding the airlock, did you run the car upto temperature with the expansion cap off when you changed the thermostat???
if not this would be the first thing to try .
start the car up, take the expansion cap off, turn the heaters on to hot and maximum blow setting, then rev the engine upto say 3000rpm and hold it there. it will take a few minutes for the engine to get upto temperature, once this happens the thermostat should open and the fans will kick in.
when the thermostat opens pay attention to the coolent level in the expansion bottle as this may drop drastically, fill it up to the level if so.
IF there is air in your system it will start to bubble and spit out of the expansion bottle. keep the car revs at 3000rpm but every now and then go and check the heaters in the car to see if they are blowing hot.
this can take a while depending on how much air is in your system (if any at all), the preocedure can also be made easier by drilling a blead hole in the thermostat (some manufacturers do this in the factory some dont) but as the thermostat is already fitted this would be a massive pain in the arse.
the above procedure always works for me but i am no certified mechanic, im just speaking from experience.
